Stunning Electron Microscope PHOTOS

The Microcanyon was taken with a microscope from FEI's Nova DualBeam Family, unlike the other two which were taken with microscopes from the Quanta family. The Quanta microscope was also used to take this image of a hydrothermal worm that rocked the internet.

This year's winner, however, was taken at an extremely high magnification, with a width of just 67µm, making it more than what it seems. In reality it's a micro-crack in a piece of steel, taken after multiple bending tests.

Snowflakes Up Close: A Small, Fragile World

"If you're one of those people who likes to ponder things while looking out a frosty window on a cold winter day, these pictures will clear up one of those long standing wonders: each snowflake really IS unique. Some look like roman columns, others circuit boards or spaceships. Taken under high magnification using a microscope, these images bring a fragile and beautiful world into view."

Making Miniature Buildings from Foamboard

This is an interesting site that makes small pieces of foam board look like full size buildings. What do we know about our perceptual system that can explain how this happens?

ManBabies

"Maybe you're familiar with the ManBabies craze sweeping the internets -- the concept: babies' heads and their dads' heads are seamlessly switched using photoshop with weird and arresting results. "

What does your text say about face recognition? Based on that how would you describe what is going on here preceptually? What does your text say about size constancy?  What effect do the head swap have on size perception?

Relative Size

My sister sends some pretty interesting forwards. How is this a good example of relative size?

The caption in the forward said Dog for Sale - Can't afford to feed him...

How does this relate to size constancy? What does this tell us about relative size? Does the tall guy make the small guy look smaller - or the other way around? Guess the heights of each person - did one influence the guess the other?

Stop-Motion Miniature Set

I found a site where this guy builds miniature sets. But they only showed the sets with nothing to compare them to so there was no way to scale them and you couldn't fully appreciate the work. So I found a youtube with some guy making sets out of cardboard. They are miniature, but not realistic. There are a bit too many ads as well. If you find a better video let me know and I'll replace this one.

Watch the video and discuss what is going on and how it relates to what we are studying. If you want, go ahead and build a miniature set of your own.

World's Smallest Snowman

How small is small?

The snowman was made from two tin beads used to calibrate electron microscope astigmatism. The eyes and smile were milled using a focused ion beam, and the nose, which is under 1 [micrometer] wide (or 0.001 mm), is ion beam deposited platinum.
