Week #14 Online-Line assignment (Due Thursday)

You should already have a product or service picked out for your final. Please do some in-depth research on the science behind that product or service and report your findings below. Please include three urls you used for you research. Note: this information will be useful when you write your final paper.

Topics in the News?

What I would like you to do is to start applying what we are learning in class to real world matters. Some might ask, "What good is learning psychology if we can't apply it to real world matters?" So that is what we are going to do with this topical blog assignment.

What I would like you to do is to either go to NPR (http://www.npr.org/ ), the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/ ) or any news site listed at the bottom of this page (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ listed in their news sources) and read, watch, or listen to something that is interesting to you and relates to what we have been learning in the class.

Please respond the blog by BRIEFLY telling us in essay format:

What your topic is and what the piece you chose was. Why you picked it (what made it interesting for you) and what did you expect to see. What did you find most interesting about the piece

Next discuss IN DETAIL how it relates to the class using terms, terminology, and concepts that we have learned so far in class. Include definitions.

Please make sure you use the terms, terminology and concepts you have learned so far in the class. It should be apparent from reading your post that you are a college student well underway in a course in psychology.

Include the URL in your post.

Make a list of key terms and concepts you used in your post.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Week 12 Online assignment (Due Monday)

Please go to the following site, poke around and find something interesting to you and write about it from a sensation perception perspective. The same grading rubric will be applied as we use on the other 10 point assignments (word count and terms).

Let us know if you have questions.

Reading Activity Week #1 (ASAP)

Please make sure you are registered for the sensation & perception class and then spend a little time orienting yourself with the class blog site. While you are at it please look over the syllabus pages and make sure you understand what we will be doing this semester as it relates to the syllabus.

Once you have finished this please leave a comment about what you think about the blog site, the class, or any particular blog post you have read. We mostly want to make sure you can log in and comment. If you have problems logging in send us an email (otto.maclin@uni.edu) and let us know what we can do to help.

Topical Blog Week #1 (ASAP)

By now you should have been able to log in and comment on the blog site. What we would like you to do now is to go to the following pages and read some of the comments left from the students in the class before you.

http://www.psychologicalscience.com/perception/2012/04/topical-blog-week-12-due-thursday.html
http://www.psychologicalscience.com/perception/2012/04/topical-blog-week-14-due-thursday.html
http://www.psychologicalscience.com/perception/2012/04/topical-blog-week-13-due-thursday.html

After reading the posts please answer the following:
Which posts did you like the best? Why?
Has reading these posts changed your idea of what sensation / perception is? Why or why not?
Based on these posts are there any specific topics you are interested in learning?

Reading Activity Week #2 (Due Monday)

Please read chapter 1 of our text book (if you don't have a book yet, please let me know). After reading chapter 1, please respond to the following questions:

What were three things from the chapter that you found interesting? Why were they interesting to you? Which one thing did you find the least interesting? Why? What did you read in the chapter that you think will be most useful to in understanding Sensation & Perception? Finally indicate two topics or concepts that you would like more information about.

Once you are done with this assignment make a list of the terms and concepts you used in your post

Topical Blog Week #2 (Due Wednesday)

We would like you to find a topic from chapter 1 that you were interested in and search the internet for material on that topic. You might, for example, find people who are doing research on the topic, you might find web pages that discuss the topic, you might find youtube clips that demonstrate something related to the topic, etc. What you find and use is pretty much up to you at this point. But use at least 3 sources.

Once you have completed your search and explorations, we would like you to a) state what your topic is, b) discuss how it fits into the chapter, and c) why you are interested in it. Next, we would like you to take the information you found related to your topic, integrate/synthesize it, and then write about it. At the end, please include working URLs for the three websites.

Once you are done with your post make list of the terms and terminology you used in your post.

By integrating/synthesizing we mean to take what your read/experienced from the internet search (and from the chapter if you like) organize the information into the main themes, issues, info, examples, etc. about your topic and then write about the topic in your own words using that information. This is hard for some people to do - many students write what we refer to as "serial abstracts." They are tempted to talk about the websites rather than the topic proper. They will talk all about website #1, start a new paragraph and talk all about web site #2, start a new paragraph and talk all about web site #3, and then write some kind of conclusion. Serial means one after the other...This what you DON'T want to do!

At first it is a real challenge to get out of the habit of writing "serial abstracts," but we assure you once you get the hang of it it is much easier to write using the integration method. And besides this is the way researchers and scientists write their technical reports and findings - many of you will have to be able to do this for other classes and for jobs that you may eventually be hired for so now is a good time to learn this skill. At this point don't worry about a grade, worry about doing your best to have fun with the topic  We will work on citing the sources later....

Let us know if you have any questions.

Reading Activity Week #3 (Due Monday)

Please read chapter 2. After reading the chapter, please respond to the following questions:

Next you will be asked what three things from the chapter that you found interesting?

1a) What did you find interesting?
1b) Why was it interesting to you?

2a) What did you find interesting?
2b) Why was it interesting to you?

3a) What did you find interesting?
3b) Why was it interesting to you?

4a) What one (1) thing did you find the least interesting?
4b) Why wasn't it interesting to you?

5) What did you read in the chapter that you think will be most useful to in understanding Sensation / Perception?

6) How, in what ways, does this chapter relate (build on) to the previous chapters?

7a) What topic would you like to learn more about?
7b) Why?

8) What ideas related to what you were reading (what did you think about) did you have while reading the chapter?

9) Once you are done with your post make list of the terms and terminology you used in your post.

Final Spring 2015 (Due Tuesday May 5th)

For the Final assignment you will be asked to develop a product, service, etc. based on the perceptual science you have been learning in class this semester.

While we are interested in the product, we are mostly interested in the science behind it, and the depth you researched the science behind it.

Imagine we are potential investors and scientists, you have to really sell the product to us by selling the science. The more different areas you cover, the better.

Other than that this is a fairly open ended assignment as it is up to you to put this together, how you want to present it.

The final is worth 40 points. As such it should show twice the work as a topical blog. Let us know if you have any questions.

Make a list of the terms and concepts at the bottom of the post.

This is where you can relate some things you were thinking about during spring break that relates to what we are learning in class. This is an extra credit assignment so you don't have to think during spring break, but if you do : -)

Also I was going to put up a picture of spring break, but when I googled spring break for images I realized that I it might not be a good idea to post any of the ones that came up...wow!

Week #7 Online Day Assignment (due Thursday)

I would like you to go to choose one of the three  experiments below to do for this assignment. First read through the introduction and the instructions for the online lab experiment.

Week 6: Perceived Depth as a Function of Retinal Disparity
Random Dot Stereograms (Red/Blue anaglyph glasses required)

16A-Binocular Depth Perception Experiment

Week 7: Global Motion Sensitivity using Random Dot Cinematography
17A-Motion Discrimination Experiment

Week 8: Visual Search Time as a Function of Background Distracter Set Size and Type
Visual Search Experiment (01A-Feature Search; 01B-Conjunction Search)

IMPORTANT: When you click on the button at the bottom of the page to "RUN THE EXPERIMENT" you may be asked to log in. If you log in as GUEST you should be able to get in. You will also need a computer with up to date Java plug-ins.

The experiment takes about 15 minutes - perceptually it seems like forever : -) but don't give up and don't just start clicking on buttons to get it over with because we want the data it provides you when you are done.

After all that, since most of the work was doing the assignment. For this blog post, just say I did the experiment and briefly discuss your experience.

Once you are done with your post make list of the terms and terminology you used in your post.
