"Traditional computer processing is based on 1 and 0, yes and no, but Lyric Semiconductor wants us to consider the power of  'maybe'. The Cambrdige, Massachusetts startup recently came out of stealth to announce the development of their new computer chip that calculates using probabilities. "

Why is this a radical change from how computers are built? What do you think computing will become as a result? Wil this allow computer to think/process information more like humans? Will this hasten the coming of the singularity? What is singularity anyway?

Wow. Its interesting that we try to use computer jargon to describe the brain, and this company is trying to change the manor of processing in a computer to be more like the human brain. To a computer something is either true or not, but with this a computer will be able to accept that a variable may be sometimes true, not only that but the computer will be able to determine the probability, how often it will be true. This is not only more human like it is super human. No human can run statistics in their head without taking time, and a pencil and paper. The chip would alter it's assumptions about the probabilities with every piece of information it processes; like learning. CAN ANYONE SAY SKYNET?? From my understanding singularity is when a single computer will have more processing power than the entire human race. It's awe inspiring to think we can create these artificial enhancements to human intelligence, but I have seen all the Terminator movies and The Matrix way too many times.
